Conclusion

The Waikiki Gateway Hotel sits on a busy road in an urban area, making it a less-than-ideal spot for a relaxing tropical vacation. However, for those who want to be close to Hawaiian nightlife and shopping options, this hotel is not a bad choice, especially given its affordable rates. Many of Waikiki's shops, restaurants and bars are within walking distance. It's not a bad option for budget-conscious business travelers who also want to be located on Kalakaua Avenue, especially those who want easy access to the Waikiki Convention Center (which is a 10-minute walk from the hotel). While the low rates are a bonus, rooms are small and many are in desperate need of an update, with dated decor and old TVs.

Hotel La Cruz

Hotel class:Budget

An older skyscraper, selectively updated, attracting budget-conscious travelers.

Given the modern entryway's hardwood floors and overall clean shine, guests can expect to see some impressive rooms and interiors beyond reception. However, the rest of the hotel is rather underwhelming compared to the chic feel of the lobby, which features elegant wood furniture, sculptural details, and colorful lighting behind the glass concierge desk. Its convenient location and affordable rates are a big draw, as the hotel attracts both business and budget-conscious leisure travelers.

Location

On busy Kalakaua Avenue and about a five-minute walk from downtown Waikiki

Although Waikiki Gateway towers over downtown Waikiki's busiest street, Ainahau Triangle Park is essentially your backyard, with Fort DeRussy Park beyond. The proximity to these parks means that it's a pleasant walk through many green spaces to reach the beach from the hotel. In addition to the ocean, dining and nightlife options (as well as the convention center) are also within walking distance. Kalakaua Tourist Avenue is a bustling stretch of shops, restaurants, and high-rise hotels that runs through Waikiki. Diamond Head, Ala Wai Golf Course, and the Honolulu Zoo are a short drive (15 minutes or less) from the hotel. Honolulu International Airport is a 20-25 minute taxi ride.

bedrooms

Small and dated, with inconsistent updates from room to room

Most of the rooms are small and so narrow that the dresser/TV table combination is not easy to open due to its proximity to the bed. Some of the TVs are older tube-style models, while some rooms have flat screens. You'll also find worn carpeting in some, while others have new hardwood floors. Many have pale blue accent walls, complete with matching bedding accents. The bathrooms are dated, with worn cabinets and old fixtures. A small table, coffee maker, and blackout drapes come standard. Most of the rooms offer unobstructed views of the park with the ocean in the background. Although the balconies are small, there is enough space to fit a few chairs. Larger rooms with kitchens are available for extended stays.

Characteristics

Some business-friendly amenities and a small outdoor pool with a water feature, but little else

The daily service fee covers the most common needs, including Wi-Fi, business center access, and daily in-room coffee and bottled water. The business center has a few semi-private desks and two computers for guest use. There is a small meeting space with a conference table, sound system, and wall-mounted screen that can accommodate up to 20 people. The hotel's small outdoor pool is on an upper level of the hotel and offers expansive views of the city. It has a small water fountain that falls in the middle of the pool, which adds some fun to what is otherwise a boring place to take a dip.
