Specification differences between the 2nd and 3rd generation Scarlett interfaces
As you can see from the table above, there are some notable improvements in Gen 3. All specifications considered,inputs and outputs benefit from wider dynamic range, gain ranges, and higher input and output levels.
What else is new in Gen 3?

Focusrite Scarlett 3rd Gen Features and Enhancements

Focusrite has marketed the Scarlett line in the league of "budget" sound cards, although they have been very successful as they can cut costs without sacrificing quality. The XLR ports, buttons and dials feel well-built and the chassis, despite being partly plastic, feels rock solid. The third generation continues this trend with great attention paid to build quality, and not much can be said when comparing the two generations: both are solid iterations.

Focusrite claims that third-generation Scarlett interfaces are characterized by high gain values and low noise. The dynamic range figure is about 110dBin the 3rd generation series for line, mic and instrument inputs (an improvement over the 2nd generation 106-109dB).
The overall gain range has also been improved from 50dB to 56dB.Not to mention high-headroom instrument inputs, additional line-level inputs for flexible routing and recording setups, plus balanced TRS outputs to eliminate speaker interference and hum.
loopback functionality
The loopback feature was previously only offered on the Focusrite Saffire Pro lineup (except for the exclusive first-gen Scarlett 8i6), making it an excellent addition to the strong third-gen lineup.
Previously, there was a solution that used SPDIF input/output (on Scarlett interfaces with SPDIF input/output). You can loop a cable from SPDIF Out to SPDIF In on the Scarlett and get similar loopback functionality without signal degradation (since it's still a digital signal).
Loopback lets you mix stereo material with any hardware input or software playback channels, using two virtual inputs, useful for podcasting, live streaming, and sampling, to name a few.

Is the upgrade worth it?
Improved specs and extra features are welcome additions, and we think they've done well to stay competitive. That said, if you've just bought a second-gen interface, we wouldn't worry.
The new 'Air Mode' and mono/stereo flips are lovely additions, but unless you really need them you'll be fine with the second gen. However, we recommend choosing the 3rd generation over the 2nd generation if this is your first purchase.
One welcome difference is the new headphone amps, which are much louder (and clearer) than previous generations.
Both generations are perfect for the basic to mid-range bedroom producer looking to get ideas out quickly and efficiently, with decent preamps and great sound.
If you are just starting out in music production, we recommend looking for apackagewhich helps you to save some money.
